Many thanks to the artist Silvia Lorenz for her workshop introducing our participants to Sculptural Processes – Traps, Maps, Skeletons during the basic course within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.
“Traps, Maps, Skeletons
In this course we will try out two basic sculptural techniques: molding and assemblage.
Day 1: We use clay to work on a relief-like form which we shape and deform with the help of various materials and tools. This miniature landscape, something in between a trap and a map, will be molded in plaster in a second step. After the cast is dried we will try and discuss different ways of presentation.
Day 2: We work on a free-style relief, assembling various materials. We will be testing different ways of fixing and mounting the structure as well as giving it a finishing surface. This “positive” version of yesterdays “landscape” might come out like an x-Ray or skeleton which reveals underlying structures.
The practical work will each day be kicked off with a “theory and images” introduction, in which various sculptural positions dealing with our topic are presented. The core of the course is the direct haptic experience by trying out different sculptural materials.” (Text by courtesy of Silvia Lorenz)
