Contemporary Drawing

We have set the date for the international Spring Academy of the BERLIN ART INSTITUTE (April 25 – 29, 2016) so that it connects with one of the most important art events in Berlin, the Gallery Weekend Berlin (April 29 – May 1, 2016).

The program of the Spring Academy is developed in cooperation with artists and theorists. This year it is about contemporary drawing.

In addition to lectures and time for artistic practice and exchange at the BAI, there will be a visit to the Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Draw-ings) and a tour to selected galleries and project spaces at the opening of the Gallery Weekend.

Introduction to the history of recent drawing by Jan-Philipp Fruehsorge M.A.

“Since the 1960s until most recently drawing, unlike any other artistic medium, has been continuosly undergoing a transformation process which led to a radically new view and defintion of its functions and practices. Drawing has turned from the traditional tool of developing ideas to become a transmedia universal medium, transcending the borderlines of the analog and digital realms of imagemaking and also embracing artistic as well as non artistic practices.”The lecture will present an overview of the expanded field of drawing of the last 30-40years, putting emphasis on selected artistic positions and some pivotal institutional exhibitions that have been influential.
