Many thanks to the artist Luise Schröder for her lecture BEYOND THE ARCHIVE – History, Memory and the Power of Images by Luise Schröder and discussing the works of our participants within the Studio Program Art Residency at BAI.
“In her lecture Luise Schröder presents her artistic practice at the intersection of art, education and politics. The focus is on how artistic research can give rise to alternative forms of knowledge and bring social power relations to light. The starting point for Schröder’s lecture is her artist’s publication Strömungen in Bewegung (2025), which examines the East German women’s and lesbian movement of the 1980s and 1990s in the GDR. Through this project and other artistic works, Schröder offers an insight into artistic research methods, particularly in relation to images, photographs and texts. How can such methods be used to challenge social and historical narratives and develop new forms of storytelling?” (Text courtesy of Luise Schröder)
Luise Schröder is a visual artist working with photography, video, installation, performance and printed matter. She deals with the notions of history and memory, and with their respective significance for the present. Her works are always based on an extensive theoretical and practical research, which opens up poetic spaces for reflection, alternative contexts of knowledge and new perspectives on history within the present. Luise Schröder’s works were presented internationally in various solo and group exhibitions and screenings, including Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin; Centre Pompidou, Paris; BIENALSUR – International Biennial of Contemporary Art of the South, Córdoba & Montevideo; 7th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, Berlin; and Galerie EIGEN+ART, Leipzig/Berlin. In 2024/25, she was a fellow of the Berlin Artistic Research Programme and she is a member of the international artists’ collective THE CROWN LETTER. In recent years, Luise Schröder has held teaching positions at various institutions, including the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig.
