Many thanks to the artist Man Schneider for his seminar Your Archive Is Your Method and discussing the works of our participants within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School & Arts Incubator.
“In order to question the artistic positions, I lead conversations with the participants about their work archive parallel to the work meetings. As a work archive I understand the thinking space, the background, the space-time concept for artistic production. This can range from family records (photos, videos), theoretical or literary texts, memories, the representation of important personal decisions and points of view to fragmentary collections of text, images and materials. How do these (left-behind) traces become aesthetic concepts of the real or covert or open instructions?
The task is to present, to stage and to record the selected “archive material” in a performative way and to formulate an idea for an own archive. This can be as a 2-minute performance, as a photo or video story, as a poem, as a recited text, as a staged conversation or as a humorous comment.
