Many thanks to the artist duo VARIOUS & GOULD for their seminar We the artist – collaborative art practice and discussing the works of our participants within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School & Arts Incubator.

“The artist duo Various & Gould has been an integral part of Berlin’s Urban Art scene for over a decade. Their creation is based on the simple but striking formula 1+1=3. In a playful and unconventional way, the two artists tackle major social issues. The duo tries to find ever new and specific forms of expression in each of their series. The most frequently asked question that the artist duo gets to hear will be the central theme of this seminar: ”How does your collaboration actually work?“

Together we will look into the challenges and the advantages of collaborative art making.  In addition to examples from our own work, we will introduce other artists who work together, either in collectives or duos. Alternated by practical exercises on the subject, this course should help to define or consolidate your own position more precisely. Many artists see themselves as loners or are even being pushed into that role of the solitary artist. We will talk about that image – how much of it is true or whether it is rather a myth or even a self-fulfilling prophecy constructed by our society.

Following the theoretical part, the participants of the BAI have the opportunity to discuss their work with us in joint studio talks. ‘Many hands make for light work’ (John Heywood)”. (Text by courtesy of VARIOUS & GOULD)
