Many thanks to the artist Ben Cottrell for his lecture Splintered Vision and discussing the works of our participants within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.
“The title Splintered Vision suggests the exuberant shattering of a mirror image and the illusion of unified identity into multiple shards and fragments. And in doing so, releasing an explosion of identities, perspectives and images that radiate outwardly. Vision that cuts like broken glass. Superstitious fractured sight. Broken hallucination. Multiple personalities. Here, there is an ambivalent relation between the destructive act and the vibrant creation of a form that rays out like a star or a little flower full of glimpses, reflections and echoes.
For his second lecture at BAI, artist Ben Cottrell takes us on a kaleidoscopic journey through the cracked looking glass to explore themes of fragmentation, rupture, multiplicity, order and chaos in regard to his ongoing body of work. Reflecting how artists can explore multiple voices and forms simultaneously in their practice.
How does this splintering and disintegration reflect the dizzy excess of information and collapse of cultural narratives today? And rather than seeking to find or reassemble a lost continuity, how do we create new dynamic relations between the parts?” (Text by courtesy of Ben Cottrell)
