Sophia op ten Berg (b. 2002, Amsterdam) is an artist working in different disciplines, including drawing, painting, writing, video art, performance and textile work/embroidery. She has studied Philosophy and Theatre Studies at the University of Amsterdam and Creative Writing at The New School in New York. Currently she is developing her own artistic practice centered around the personal and the intimate, which are always philosophical in nature. Themes include the gap between nature and society, the subconscious and the physicality of emotions. Her artistic position is based on the conviction that philosophy and art should always be practiced together.

During her participation in the Studio Program Art Residency at BERLIN ART INSTITUTE, Sophia developed a research project into the relationship between humans and animals. She investigates the human wish to become an animal as a form of human escapism, in which the animalistic becomes almost sacred, and at the same time as a patronizing romanticization of the “simple” animalistic. She created two series of works around this topic, both existing of three large textile pieces. (Text courtesy of the artist)
