Many thanks to the artist Julie Beugin for her lecture Models for Transformation: Painting and Process and discussing the works of our participants within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.

“Through major changes, the idea of making a model in order to visualize space has been a steady throughline in Julie Beugin’s painting practice. From her representational paintings of imaginary inside/outside spaces to her current abstract collage-based works, Beugin has always begun her work with models such as sculptures, drawings or collages. In this artist talk she will trace the key points of her development while discussing ideas of material transformation and creative process in painting.” (Text by courtesy of Julie Beugin)

Julie Beugin is a Canadian artist, based in Berlin since 2009, who works in abstract painting and photographic collage. In her collages and paintings, she transforms the routine pathways and quotidian architecture of Berlin into unexpected alignments of light and space. She completed her MFA in 2008 at Concordia University in Montréal, and her BFA at Emily Carr University in Vancouver in 2004. She has been the recipient of numerous grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, and has exhibited across Canada as well as in spaces throughout Berlin. In 2023 she participated in a three week artist residency at Superbude in Vienna. Recent exhibitions include the group showThe Alien Everyday at Spoiler in Berlin, and the solo exhibition, Daylight Cut-Outs at VIVIANEART, in Calgary, Canada.
