Many thanks to the artist Jens Nordmann for his workshop organized by Mirjam Martinović introducing our participants to Painting Technique – Water-based colors. The basic course is part of the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School & Arts Incubator.
“Similarities and differences in the composition of watercolors and gouache will be demonstrated and examined. This will also give you a fundamental insight into the formulation process. You will get to try out mediums to modulate the capacities of watercolor paints and learn about the different qualities of special watercolor papers. Brushes, specifically designed for watercolor painting that hold large loads of paint while still forming a perfect tip to enable precise work, will be introduced. Further we will investigate the correlations of line and form. We will use highly pigmented and lightfast watercolor markers and watercolor sticks starting with line drawing in order to expanse the pigment and experiment with the development of forms.
An essential part of working with acrylic paints is the use of mediums. Paints may change their appearance due to the use of different mediums such as matte or high gloss mediums and varnishes. Body and texture of acrylics may vary from heavy body to spray paint or airbrush application. We will introduce certain pigments and examine their specific properties: transparency, opacity and longevity (especially lightfastness). Certain pigments require mindful and cautious handling due to their health risks. This course will also give an introduction of safe alternatives to cadmium pigments only recently discovered.
