November 12 – 13, 2019, 10 am – 1 pm

Many thanks to the artist Anja Tchepets for her workshop introducing our participants to EXPRERIMENTAL DRAWING – Remapping and Recomposing during the basic course within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School & Arts Incubator.

Day 1
“For these series of exercises we will use a map of Berlin. We will start by separating lines and layers, retracing the streets and eliminating the blocks. What happens when we follow the lines and patterns created by public transport and use them for making our own compositions? What happens when the lines and contours of the Berlin wall can be moved or changed for the sake of composition? How does tracing of our own daily travel add to the city map?

We will experiment with drawing lines and layers by choosing only a few elements on the map, and by a process of elimination, we will create our own compositions. We will zoom into neighbourhoods and areas where our own daily movements and experiences become the format for our very own Berlin maps. At the end of this exercise we will be putting the Berlin map back together, navigating through our experiments within a group discussion.”

Day 2
“We will continue our experimental city exploration working on creation of our own Berlin postcards. Starting working with common postcard motif, adding elements of collage we will transform them into a surprisingly new picture content. A rearrangement of space within the cards will be a main focus in our drawings, resulting in unusual and creative city views.

In the second part of this exercise pop-up elements will be introduced. After choosing the most suitable elements for our motives we will be integrating them into our compositions and exploring how third dimention influence our drawings.” (Text by courtesy of Anja Tchepets)
