Many thanks to the designer, artist, filmmaker & educator Matthias Schellenberger for his DIY Workshop Diddley Bow with our participants during the basic course within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.
“MASCH (Matthias Schellenberger) works in addition to his work as a designer, artist and filmmaker for his label »RAUMbilder«, above all as a freelance media educator in various Berlin schools. He prefers to develop model projects for workshops that combine analog and digital media. The focus of his work in recent years has been on the production of various DIY musical instruments, such as cigar box guitars (CBG), lamellophones and other experimental instruments. With the shared experience of self-made musical instruments, sound and video collages are created from the various sounds and video snippets after the workshops, which are collected by the participants during the construction process. These documentary photo and video contributions, DIY tutorials or music clips are produced exclusively with mobile devices and sound or video editing applications.
In the BAI course, an electrified “Diddley Bow” is produced – this is a single-string bass that is considered the forerunner of the slide guitar and has its origin in Africa. The string instrument comes in a wide variety of designs and was mainly used in the USA in delta blues. But it is also very suitable for the production of experimental sounds. At the end of the DIY workshop, some video and sound applications for mobile devices will be briefly presented, with which the sound or video samples of the workshop can be further processed later.” (Text by courtesy of Matthias Schellenberger)
