Constructing Space in Painting

DAY 1: Monochromatic Interior Space
As we all have been spending a lot of time in our homes over the past year, how can we use painting as a way to see our spaces with fresh eyes? The interior has been a favourite subject of painting throughout history, with the frame of the window mirroring the frame of the canvas as a view to another world. Through this project we will explore the methods of translating 3D space onto a 2D surface through visual ideas such as perspective, overlap and scale. Through moving our bodies to shift our point of view, we will create surprising compositions from familiar spaces. We will finish the class by making a monochromatic painting of our surrounding space from a new perspective.

DAY 2: Inventing Your Own Space
In the second day of the workshop, instead of observing the space around us, we will invent an imaginary space. We will build simple maquettes out of coloured paper and use them as visual information for painting. Using the compositional skills we learned in Day 1, on Day 2 we will add a greater focus onto the use of colour and light in the depiction of space in painting. Our maquettes will give us the visual specificity necessary to make the painting of imaginary spaces tactile and tangible.“ (Text: Courtesy Julie Beugin)
