Vortrag CRINGE: AWKWARDNESS AS A SITE OF KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION von Pilvi Takala

02. August 2018, 10 – 14 Uhr

Vielen Dank an die Künstlerin Pilvi Takala für ihren Vortrag CRINGE: Awkwardness as a site of knowledge production und die Arbeitsbesprechungen mit unseren TeilnehmerInnen.

„Can awkwardness be productive? If so, what kind of an insight might awkwardness provide? What can it teach us in specific situations? How might we use awkwardness to make visible implicit boundaries and expectations? What does awkwardness become when it goes too far?

Pilvi Takala (b. 1981) is an artist living and working between Berlin and Helsinki. In this lecture she will present recent works and discuss her methodology in relation to awkwardness. Her video works are based on performative interventions in which she researches specific communities in order to process social structures, and question the normative rules and truths of our behaviour in different contexts. Her works show that it is often possible to learn about the implicit rules of a social situation only by its disruption. Here awkwardness is often both the cause and result of this disruption.“ (Text: Courtesy Pilvi Takala)

Takala’s work has been shown at MoMA PS1 and New Museum, New York, Palais de Tokyo, Kunsthalle Basel, Manifesta 11, Witte de With, Rotterdam, and the 9th Istanbul Biennial. Takala won the Dutch Prix de Rome in 2011 and the Emdash Award and Finnish State Prize for Visual Arts in 2013. Her solo show will be presented in Kiasma in 2018.
