Many thanks to the artist Thomas Draschan for his seminar “Montage/Collage”.

“The famous quote from Lautréamont “As beautiful as the chance encounter of a sewing machine and an umbrella on an operating table” illustrates the principle as well as the power of a metaphor in language. In film the montage is the central way of articulation: Dizaga Vertov as well as the film avantgarde of the 1920s show the incredible power of the colission of two subsequent images. Every Artist uses metaphors and collissions more or less consciously. This workshop is aiming towards a deliberate and outspoken way to use these means of expression.

As an artist my own work is rooted in analogue film, in working with found footage and found materials and objects. It is possible to extract the underlying principles and apply them to other media and art forms. During the seminar we are going to analyse works from art history, some of my found footage work as well as the work of the young artists in this class.“ (Thomas Draschan)
