Many thanks to the artist Julie Beugin for her online workshop introducing our participants to Explorations In Painting – Discovering Colour and Light during the basic course within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.

Discovering Colour and Light

DAY 1: Colour Mixing for Light and Shadow
Part one of this workshop on colour will present basic tools and knowledge of colour mixing to give students a feeling of confidence with their own personal explorations of colour. By breaking down the complexities of colour mixing into simple steps, students will gain confidence and material understanding of the major building blocks of colour mixing. Starting from the basics of the colour wheel, we will discuss how to maintain brightness while mixing, and work through complementary colours, tints and shades. Using a basic palette to mix our own blacks, browns, oranges, purples and greens, we will also learn how to make nuanced darks and greys. Through experimentation and play we will learn through doing.

DAY 2: Discovering Non-Local Colour
In day two of the workshop, we will discuss what non-local colour is, and look at historical and contemporary examples and the diversity of possibilities invented colour presents. How can you use colour to create light, mood and atmosphere? What makes colour look contemporary? Building on the colour mixing skills we learned in day one, in day two we will transform a photograph we have taken ourselves into an atmospheric painting through the use of non-local colour.” (Text by courtesy of Julie Beugin)
