The MISK ART INSTITUTE (MISK) becomes partner in the BAI Residency Program at the BERLIN ART INSTITUTE. BAI and MISK have agreed to build a collaborative partnership supporting international residencies for arts professionals.
In the spirit of an intercultural dialogue, exchange and incubating springboard between Saudi Arabia and Germany, the vision is that through the young and dedicated emerging as well as mid-career contemporary artists, curators and critics the participation would entail sustainable and long-term networking of both institutes for future collaborations.
After the Open Call among Saudi citizens organized by the MISK ART INSTITUTE, MISK provided a shortlist of finalists. Two groups of six mid-career contemporary artists working in the fields of visual & contemporary art have been selected for a fully funded residency at BAI taking place in the fall and winter of 2021.
Currently artist & printmaker Fatima Abdulhadi and filmmaker & storyteller Khalida Bataweel take part in Block 10: 09/13 – 10/08/2021 & Block 11: 10/11 – 11/05/2021 of the BAI Studio Program.
“I am interested in storytelling through art. It is a medium for describing feelings or situations through drawings, silkscreen printing, and other printmaking techniques. My work consists of layer upon layer of deeper meanings which are expressed through the use of color. Each layer of color is a mirror that allows you to see the others clearly and accept them for what they are. All my work utilizes white spaces, which symbolize purposefully opening myself to new possibilities. As a senior lecturer, learning and teaching have played a big role in the past five years of my life. It gives me a great opportunity to observe people’s emotions and behaviors – I enjoy teaching them to find new ways to communicate with themselves and others through art and to observe the world in different ways. Many times, my students tell me that I’m the first artist they have ever met. I enjoy showing them that being an artist is not a hobby but a commitment and requires a lot of problem solving. My most recent solo exhibition was “Out of Print” at Alāan Artspace, Riyadh. In this exhibition, I combined my openness to new possibilities; multi-technique approach of paper, silkscreen, and wood blocking; and my passion to reflect people’s emotions and memories through art.” (Text by courtesy of Fatima Abdulhadi)
