Lecture PROFESSIONALLY UNPROFESSIONAL: WHAT IS EXPERTISE IN ART? by Dagmara Genda

September 30, 2021, 10 am – 3 pm

Many thanks to the artist & writer Dagmara Genda for her lecture Professionally Unprofessional: What is expertise in art? and discussing the works of our participants within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.

“Dagmara Genda will present her work through in the context of professionalism and professionalisation in the art industry. As a largely unregulated field, what it means to be an artist changes from generation to generation, country to country and even person to person. More often than not, artists are multi-skilled multi-taskers and life-long learners, who are constantly reinventing themselves. In addition to talking about her artwork, Genda will also talk about her writing practice, public art, teaching, as well as the various other skills she has learned and still in the process of learning. Related reading material for those who are interested will be suggested as part of the lecture.” (Text by courtesy of Dagmara Genda)

Dagmara Genda (b.1981 in Koszalin, Poland) lives and works as an artist and freelance writer in Berlin. Her art practice is rooted in drawing, which she employs through the simultaneously connective and divisive form of the line. Mark-making is a means of defining and making sense of the world, with the benefit of malleability: the marks can be redrawn at any time. In this way, drawing becomes a mode of thinking as well as an adaptation strategy. Genda has shown in artist-run centres and various institutions across Canada such as the Esker Foundation, Walter Phillips Gallery, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, among others. Since 2017, she has been living in Germany where she has shown at the Arp Museum, Berlin Weekly, OQBO and is part of an upcoming group show at KAI 10 | Arthena Foundation in Düsseldorf.
