Many thanks to the artist Emma Waltraud Howes for her lecture MANAGEABLE MATTER and discussing the works of our participants within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.

“In her lecture ‘Manageable Matter’, Emma Waltraud Howes will present her transdisciplinary working methodology, offering a model for expanding and deepening one’s practice. She will demonstrate how incremental shifts in perception and intention can be cultivated and accumulated over time, resulting in a cohesive body of work. During individual studio visits, she will further explore this process, offering tools for how to derive and create materials from personal embodied experiences, to give form to intention and intention to form.” (Text by courtesy of Emma Waltraud Howes)

Emma Waltraud Howes (Born 1976 in Toronto, CA, lives and works in Berlin, DE) oscillates between movement and form to create time-based performance installations that incorporate soft-sculpture, sound, and improvisation with fallible objects. Their transdisciplinary works manifest as multiple reconfigurations of the body and space informed by a background in dance (ballet, baroque opera, modern, and baguazhang—an internal Chinese martial art), performance theory, and the visual arts within the framework of a conceptual art practice. Their labor is guided by observations of gestures with a focus on speculative scores—compositions representative of a stage in the development from concept and intention to depiction and effect. Buttressed by these graphic systems, Howes creates space for concentrated encounters, or ‘serious play’; a process that embraces embodied experience toward the creation of ‘hyper-glitch’ operas as ‘Cadavre Exquis’—chimeras that celebrate comprehensive failure and foster alternative perspectives.
