Many thanks to the artist Wojciech Kosma for his lecture Chujowe systemy zawsze padają & discussing the works of our participants within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.
“spalarnia is Polish performance artist Wojciech Kosma’s latest musical project. With a background in composition and computer science, Kosma previously had a successful career in contemporary art exploring love, pleasure, intimacy and gender through acclaimed pieces performed in places such as Tate Modern, London, Chisenhale Gallery, London Museum of Modern Art Warsaw, Volksbühne, Berlin and Interstate Projects, NYC, among others.
With spalarnia, he continues to explore these themes through poetic avant-pop tracks that draw equally from traditional Polish folk and current dance music vocabulary. His composition style relies heavily on deceptively simple yet highly effective hooks, repetitions that often sound like incantations and sparse instrumentation. Skilfully merging together Eurodance, R&B, trap, neo-folk and traditional Polish music, Kosma creates hypnotic earworms brimming with emotion. His poetic lyrics explore themes such as intimacy, gender and political oppression, often directly addressing discrimination and inequalities in his native Poland.
spalarnia is seeking to establish deeply personal new mythologies rooted in Polish culture and tradition while promoting a queer, secular and anti-nationalist sentiment. spalarnia’s first self-titled tape was released on Dym Records in July 2020. In March 2022 he contributed his track ”uchodźczyni” to We Stand with Ukraine, a benefit compilation from the eastbloc antifascist sound alliance network. His debut album USTA is out in May 2022.” (Text by courtesy of Wojciech Kosma)
