TECHNICAL WORKSHOP by Mirjam Hintz & GOLDEN Artist Colors

October 20, 2020, 10 am – 3 pm

Many thanks to the artist & paintings conservator Mirjam Hintz for her technical workshop organized by GOLDEN Artist Colors introducing our participants to Williamsburg Handmade Oils & QOR Watercolor. The basic course is part of the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.

Williamsburg Handmade Oils

Williamsburg Oil Paints are handmade, high quality oil paints in over 170 shades. In this practical demonstration the oil colors can be experienced to learn about their properties. Best practice advice and some of the latest research from the GOLDEN Materials & Applications Department regarding oil painting is also presented. We will discuss the components of oil paints and the aging characteristics of oils. Some oils yellow less than others and they also dry at different rates. Additionally we will discuss what information can be found on the paint labels, light fastness, pigment classifications and hues. Since oil paints tend to become stiffer over time, it is essential to paint on suitable substrates. We will go through substrate and canvas preparation and discuss the most archival options. We will explore a range of mediums and discuss possibilities to paint solvent free.

QOR Watercolor

The QOR Watercolor lecture demo is a hands on experience where participants get to try out the paints, practice washes and glazes and paint over alternative acrylic-based grounds. QOR Watercolors are bound in a new synthetic binder, called Aquazol, rather than Gum Arabic and offer a couple of unusual application possibilities to artists. In no other paint medium is the pigment as prevalent as in watercolor. We will discuss pigment groups, transparency, staining and granulating pigments. We will also take a step back and look at the history of watercolor paper and provide an overview on current available papers and their properties. We will test and practice using products like Masking Fluid, QOR Medium and Lift Aid, as well as discuss varnishing of water colors.” (Text by courtesy of Mirjam Hintz & GOLDEN Artist Colors)
