Many thanks to the artist & paintings conservator Mirjam Hintz for her technical workshop organized by GOLDEN Artist Colors introducing our participants to Acrylic Paint Lines: Heavy Body, Fluid, High Flow and OPEN Acrylics & Acrylic Gels, Mediums, and Pastes & Varnishes and Topcoats. The basic course is part of the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.
“Acrylic Paint Lines: Heavy Body, Fluid, High Flow and OPEN Acrylics
This workshop reviews the GOLDEN professional quality acrylic paint lines, some of the most valuable gels and mediums, and a ton of valuable information about acrylics in general. The GOLDEN paint lines distinguish themselves through their unique viscosity rates and drying times, which gives them distinct working properties. On canvas board participants can test these paints to get a feel for these products. We will also mix the paints with a selection of the most common mediums, gels, and pastes, which allow artists to extend their paints, increase translucency, adapt surface sheen, change texture, or extend working time. Acrylics offer artists unmatched versatility and allow for almost unlimited variety of techniques. The GOLDEN Material and Application Specialists will introduce participants to many application possibilities and point out which acrylic paints and mediums lend themselves best to specific uses. Participants will gain information about the basic components of acrylic dispersion paints, learn about the young history of acrylics as a painting medium and get a glimpse behind the scenes of modern paint making. Discover the difference between mineral and modern organic pigments and how this relates to clean color mixing, glazing, and surface sheen. Find out how GOLDEN tests for light fastness and what lightfastness ratings mean in a practical sense. GOLDEN paint tube labels are packed with information- learn how to read that information, interpret health and safety warnings and how to benefit from GOLDEN’s online technical information resources.
Acrylic Gels, Mediums, and Pastes
GOLDEN Gels and Mediums can be thought of as “paint without pigment”. Each is carefully formulated for specific purposes to provide artists with a wide range of tools to use during painting. Today there is a wide range of acrylic polymers available to artists, some will dry to films that are more flexible or stiff, particularly clear or stand out due to their resistance to crazing. Most are thermoplastic acrylic resins while a few are thermosetting. Some are better suited for the outdoors than others. The GOLDEN gels range from thick consistencies that will retain brush strokes to thinner pourable or stringy gels with long rheology. In addition to GOLDEN’s specialty polymers, we will explore matting agents, drying retarders, and surfactants, that help break the surface tension of water. Participants of this workshop are offered to try these gels and mediums, and to create reference boards for future orientation.
Varnishes and Topcoats
This workshop offers a comprehensive look at products and applications to ensure the greatest chance for success during the varnishing process. Picture varnishes offer artists the opportunity to alter and enhance the aesthetic of a painting and protect their surfaces from dust and other pollutants. Varnishes and Topcoats with UV-light stabilizer also offer protection from lightinduced color changes. GOLDEN offers water as well as mineral spirit based varnishes in various sheens. We will discuss which varnish is best suited for various painting media and how to dilute and apply these varnishes. We will also talk about what types of paintings are better left unvarnished and how varnishes can alter the aesthetic appearance of a painting. The Isolation Coat for acrylic paintings is also an integral part of the GOLDEN varnishing system, which allows varnishes to be removed and replaced safely. On dummies we will practice its brush application and discuss how to spray apply an Isolation Coat. Participants of this workshop will also be offered the opportunity to practice the application of Polymer Varnish with UVLS on dummy surfaces.” (Text by courtesy of Mirjam Hintz & GOLDEN Artist Colors)
