Many thanks to the artist Silvia Lorenz for her workshop introducing our participants to Sculptural Processes – Shapeshifting during the basic course within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.

Shapeshifting

In this course we will look at basic sculptural techniques and the transformation of selected materials. After a short theoretical introduction and a comparison of various sculptural approaches by some artists, our focus is on practical work:

Day 1 We shape and deform a mass using some unusual tools and create a small series of works.
Day 2 We add various individual parts to a sculpture (or a series of small scale sculptures) by stacking, leaning, puzzling, lacing, gluing…

Sculpture is a bulky medium, it takes up space and demands attention, encourages us to stop and take a closer look – but due to its feel and materiality it is perhaps the most forward-looking visual art: it is like a moment of stumbling and pausing in the middle of the endless, complex data stream and the chaos of life.
“Shapeshifting” is meant as a sculptural process that produces a variation of three-dimensional sketches in two „test series“, starting from a basic mass and from a selected set of individual parts.” (Text by courtesy of Silvia Lorenz)
