“The group exhibition Empathic Device – It’s Hard to Get Enough of Something That Almost Works … questions how technology is intertwined in our contemporary lives and imagines a critical way of navigating issues that stem from this global development. It proposes a notion of emotional hacking: The symbiosis that materializes when empathy and technology merge, while keeping focus on marginalized identities in the human labor force that are deliberately kept concealed. In the logic of late-stage capitalism technological tools are meant to optimize, maximize, and surveil, the exhibition, however, places these tools under a compassionate framework without renouncing said functions. As identities are not just constructed from phenomena of the Zeitgeist, but also contemporaneously from historical complexities, the exhibition tackles miscellaneous realms pertinent for society, such as cultural heritage, fashion, emotions, or corporealities, through the lens of an empathic technical device.” (Text excerpt from the press release by courtesy of Galerie Tanja Wagner)
