Many thanks to the artist Niklas Goldbach for his online seminar Radical Cut-Up* and discussing the works of our participants within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.
“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent. (Jim Jarmusch)
Creativity and culture have always been built on something already existing, but it has never been as easy as in the digital age to distribute and to change the work of others: everything seems strangely familiar to us.
The seminar begins with an artist talk and an introduction and examples of art history and popular culture made on re-creative strategies and will be followed by studio visits and individual presentations of the participants. In the second step, individual projects will be discussed and developed by means of the artistic strategies of the reenactment and the appropriation (the artistic appropriation of “found” material). The results can be camera based (video or photography), performance based – or produced with any traditional artistic medium.” (Text by courtesy of Niklas Goldbach)
