Many thanks to the artist Wojciech Kosma for his lecture The Poetry of Becoming Human and discussing the works of our participants within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.
“In 2016 Daniel Borzutzky published “The Performance of Becoming Human,” a poetry collection the title of this lecture very obviously paraphrases. It remains an inspiration, a light, a guide. I think about it often when thinking about my practice and so it seems natural I should introduce my practice through the tropes and metaphors Borzutzky’s poems can generously offer. Similarly to him, I have an affinity with thinking utopian. I find it important as a political project—to continuously imagine, and reimagine, the reality, or the multitude of realities, the possibilities of making change, to reimagine changing. I’m also fond of this emphasis on humanness. I like to think of it as the soul and the currency of my performances, poems and music, some of which I will share and ask: how to flow with the movement of being in and out of sync with one’s humanness? How to err on the side of humanness? How to commit to the poetry of becoming human? ” (Text by courtesy of Wojciech Kosma)
Wojciech Kosma is a Polish performance artist known for staging nuanced representations of intimacy that weave together dance, theatre, and personal biographies. More recently, he works with sound and poetry under the alias spalarnia, creating works that oppose and deconstruct the violent, exclusionary and white-centric propaganda of the Polish government. His performances have been shown at Tate Modern, London; Chisenhale Gallery, London; Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw; Volksbühne, Berlin and Interstate Projects, NYC among others. spalarnia tapes are released by Dym Records in Poland. Wojciech is a founding member of the artist collective East London Cable.
