Many thanks to the artist Norbert Erwin Witzgall for his lecture SOCIAL FAÇADES: Gender, Masking, and Class Distinctions and discussing the works of our participants within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.

“Norbert Witzgall is a painter and a teacher, who translates often (as a job), curates occasionally (as a hobby) and would love to take more time to write, secretly. His portraits raise questions about person and persona, image and society – a subject he is also interested in curating: for instance, in an exhibition on the (often unaddressed) problem of social class and art, or on “spectral masculinities”. He is curious to get to know the residents of the bai – and he does like coffee!” (Text by courtesy of Norbert Erwin Witzgall)

Norbert Erwin Witzgall studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Nürnberg, Ecole des Beaux Arts, Lyon, Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Vienna, and Universität der Künste, Berlin. He has exhibited internationally, at venues including Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), Kunstverein Nürnberg, DEWEER (Otegem, Belgium) and Venetia Kapernekas (NYC) e.a.

Witzgall has been a visiting professor at the MA program of VCU’s Painting and Printmaking Department in Richmond, VA. Since 2014, he has been teaching fine art at Berlin’s Universität der Künste (UdK).
