Many thanks to GOULD from the artist duo VARIOUS & GOULD for their workshop introducing our participants to EXPERIMENTAL DRAWING – Cut ’N’ Paste: Collage As A Principle Of Creation: Painting with Scissors & Coming together Piece by Piece during the basic course within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.
“This course is about conscious experimentation with the artistic method of collage. Instead of using a brush or pencil as we often do, we will reach for scissors or cutters to find shapes and create compositions.
DAY 1: Cut ’n’ Paste: Collage as a Principle of Creation – Painting with Scissors
In the introduction we will talk about Henri Matisse, who made “painting with scissors” famous. We will then explore this very direct way of working ourselves during the practical part by cutting or tearing large, colored papers and reassembling them. The imperfection involved is both daring and liberating.
DAY 2: Cut ’n’ Paste: Collage as a Principle of Creation – Coming together Piece by Piece
To begin the second day, we will look at examples from the fine arts that reveal the diverse potential of collage as a method in a variety of media and genres. The term collage will be understood very broadly as a fundamental design principle that can be transferred into completely different techniques. In the practical part, we will again use scissors, glue, paper and also materials and motifs that we have brought along (for example, in the form of photocopies). But instead of individual work, this time it’s about collaboration. Collage is more suitable for artistic teamwork than almost any other method.” (Text by courtesy of VARIOUS & GOULD)
