Many thanks to the critic, curator and artist Andreas Schlaegel for his seminar THE IMAGE REGIME and discussing the works of our participants within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.
“A picture says more than a thousand words – this commonplace reflects the power of the image. But it wasn’t there from the start, it has accumulated over time. In this seminar we will look at this development, to understand how we came to live in a regime of images.
And we will ask ourselves questions: what makes an image powerful, what does an image convey, even before we compehend its motif? We will look at phenomena like the „scopic regime“ (Ariella Azoulay), the „vertical partition“ of photography (Aïm Düelle Lüski), the „male gaze“ (Laura Mulvey), the and reflect on how „ways of seeing“ (John Berger) revealed themselves in painting. We will experiment the powers images carry, and discover the powers this bestows on us at work in making images as artists today.” (Text by courtesy of Andreas Schlaegel)
