May 24 – June 14, 2022
with 4 live online sessions on May 24, 31, June 07 & 14, 2022, each day from 4 – 6 pm

Many thanks to the artist and writer Susan Finlay & the artist and filmmaker Sophie Lee for their online seminar LOVE ME THROUGH THE SCREEN: Text and Moving Image in Contemporary Practices and discussing the contributions of our participants within the Studio Program at BAI | Berlin Artist Residency, Art School, Arts Incubator, and Live Online Courses & Classes.

“Our lives today are lived out on screens. Digitisation and its concomitant social and economic upheavals have radically changed the ways we both represent and articulate lived experience, and with this the primacy of the screen in both public and private realms. This course looks at how these shifting landscapes have shaped the use of text and moving image in contemporary artistic practices, and examines the ways these forms intersect.

Over a series of lectures, screenings and seminars we will approach text, moving image and their intersections from a wide range of perspectives. We will ask: What are the aesthetics of the archive in relation to technology? How do queer and feminist perspectives disrupt and subvert Hollywood tropes? How might historical narratives and individual memories be intertwined in artist’s film and documentary? What might we define as expanded cinema in a digital age?

The course combines a discursive approach with a practical component, with participants undertaking a small text or moving image assignment each week. Participants will then have the opportunity to share and receive feedback with the group. Collectively we will build an archive of material throughout the course through the online forum, with the option of using this towards a collaborative live streamed video performance in the final session.

This course is for artists, writers, filmmakers and curators, and anyone else hoping to either gain new knowledge or build upon existing skills in the area of text and moving image. All levels of experience are welcomed. Class time will not include instruction on self-shooting or editing programmes. All students will need access to something to shoot video, for example an smartphone. The use of a basic editing programme, for example a smartphone editing app, is desirable but not essential. Participants who are comfortable working with other cameras and editing software, and have access to these, are also welcome to do so.” (Text by courtesy of Susan Finlay & Sophie Lee)
