Many thanks to the curator, cultural strategist, and creative producer Ché Zara Blomfield for her lecture Art Relations – Against Individuality in the Art World and discussing the works of our participants within the Studio Program Art Residency at BAI.
“The art world is plagued by the capitalist ideology of the individual, most evident in the popular artist and super curator ideologies – think of Yayoi Kusama’s global institutional exhibitions and Louis Vuitton collaborations and the weight of Hans Ulrich Obrist’s name. Yet dig deeper and one will quickly come to realise these art workers only came to prominence in relation to others – be that galleries, other artists, movements, etc. We are at a time where building meaningful support networks are seemingly more vital than ever – as technologies seek to further isolate us both physically and ideologically.
My lecture will follow a personal interest in the emergence of what came to be known as Post Internet art – a movement that emerged simultaneously with a shift in online networking spaces – how that currently exists, has changed and been co-opted. We will look at the current landscape of potential for building power in relation to others, and practically learn how to identify relevant networks to find belonging in through meaningful participation.” (Text by courtesy of Ché Zara Blomfield)
