Many thanks to the artist Jens Nordmann for his workshop organized by Mirjam Martinović introducing our participants to “OIL & ACRYLIC PAINTS” during the basic course.
“Oil paints: pigments, oils, mediums and solvents
This workshop introduces the methods used in oil painting. We will examine pigments on their specific characteristics and application, discuss weight vs. volume and demonstratephysico-chemical properties of pigments that determine their use and appearance regardingchroma, value, transparency and opacity as well as longevity. Health and safety using pigments and solvents is an important part of studio practice. We will discuss common solvents and their properties and prepare our own medium combining oils and solvents while learning about the features of certain oils used for oil painting.
Acrylic paints: texture and body, mediums and pigments
An essential part of working with acrylic paints is the use of mediums. Paints may change their appearance due to the use of different mediums such as matte or high gloss mediums and varnishes. Body and texture of acrylics may vary from heavy body to spray paint or airbrush application. We will introduce certain pigments and examine their specific properties: transparency, opacity and longevity (especially lightfastness). Certain pigments require mindful and cautious handling due to their health risks. This course will also give an introduction of safe alternatives to cadmium pigments only recently discovered.” (Text by courtesy of Mirjam Martinović & ColArt – The Fine Art Collective)
