Workshop EXPERIMENTAL DRAWING: The New Hybrid Body – Contemporary Surrealist Drawing Techniques by Jasmine Reimer

General Course Description

In this two-part experimental drawing course, we will explore surrealist drawing techniques and idea-generating methods. Together and individually, students will explore new mark-making possibilities and create figurative drawings based on intuition rather than structure. Jasmine Reimer will present her drawing practice and recent large-scale drawings featuring mythical hybrid bodies. She will also discuss the important role of the hybrid in Surrealism and contemporary art and culture.

Duration: The dates will be published soon.

Hours: Each day from 10 AM – 12:30 PM

Seats: Max. 20 | Language: English

Fees: The participation fee is €90 per person including material (without accommodation).

The fee is VAT-exempt by the Governing Mayor of Berlin – Senate Chancellery Higher Education and Research pursuant to Paragraph 4 No. (21) (a)(bb) UStG (German Value Added Tax Act).

Learning outcomes

The images and techniques explored during this workshop will provide students with new pathways to explore the contemporary body and body politics. Using traditional Surrealist drawing techniques, students can begin to explore their own methods of abstraction and invention, potentially revealing their own anatomical lexicon.

Program Structure with Daily Lesson Plan

Day 1

10:00 – 10:30 am
The first day will include a short introduction to the history of Surrealism and hybrids including the art historical Grotesque. The presentation will begin with the commonly accepted founding members of the art movement followed by examples of Surrealist artists from around the world.

10:30 – 10:45 am
Exquisite corpse, group warm-up exercise.

10:45 – 12:00 noon
Jasmine will introduce two Surrealist drawing techniques and examples of each.
Using the demonstrated techniques, students will then create experimental figurative drawings, both individually and collaboratively.

12:00 noon – 12:30 pm
At the end of the first day, there will be a group discussion to review the progress made so far and to assess what work remains to be completed on the following day. This will provide an opportunity for participants to share their thoughts and insights, and to receive feedback on their work. After the discussion, there will be a general tidy up to ensure that the workspace is organised and ready for the next day’s activities.

Day 2

10:00 – 10:30 am
Jasmine will briefly introduce her drawing practice and recent large-scale charcoal works in relation to surrealism and hybrid bodies.
She will then introduce 2-3 different Surrealist drawing techniques including Frottage, a “rubbing” technique, taking students outdoors to source new textures which will become the basis for experimental figurative drawings.

10:45 – 12:00 noon
Work-period using all drawing techniques demonstrated over the 2-day workshop.

12:00 – 12:30 pm
At the end of the second day, there will be a group discussion to review work made during the workshop. This will provide an opportunity for participants to share their thoughts and insights, and to receive feedback on their work. After the discussion, there will be a general tidy up to ensure that the workspace is organised.
