WEEK 1: From Worship to Bewilderment: Feminist Hybridity in History

Introduction: 

Jasmine will introduce herself, her practice, and the general approach and objectives for the class, with a summary of activities. 

Presentation 1: From Worship to Bewilderment: Introduction to the historical, feminist hybrid 

  • The Neolithic hybrid: images, sculpture and worship in Neolithic Goddess Mythology (7000 BC – 1700BC approximately)
  • The hybrid in art history: traditional grotesque in Italy, Germany and France 15/16th C
  • The hybrid in Surrealism and contemporary art and culture (1940 – present day) 

In-class Exercise 1: 

Group drawing and writing prompts – sketchbooks 

  • Jasmine will offer a series of drawing prompts from course readings/related texts 
  • Participants will be asked to draw intuitively from the prompts for set periods of time 
  • During the drawing periods, Jasmine will provide further instruction/prompts (draw using only circles, change scale, repetition…)
  • Drawing/writing will be followed by a short discussion
