Online Course HOW TO DECOLONIZE YOUR ARTISTIC PRACTICE WITH CARE AND SOLIDARITY by Kathy-Ann Tan
“In this four-part course, we will address the ways in which artists can incorporate more self-reflexive strategies in their own artistic practices. We will also share and exchange different strategies of how we are freelance artists and cultural workers can hold the institutions with which we work accountable, from their policy and practice, to their power structures and unconscious biases. We will draw inspiration from a range of theory by Black- and intersectional feminists who were both scholars and artists, such as bell hooks, Audre Lorde, adrienne maree brown and Alexis Pauline Gumbs, and cover art theory written by BIPOC art historians. Reading these texts will give us more inspiration to shape our artistic practice in conversation with critical theory, and to explore our own personal archives, voices and styles of artistic expression through a critical lens. This will lead us to making more critically nuanced, socially-engaged art and enjoy the process of making it.
This course particularly invites artists who self-identify as BIPOC and/or queer to enroll. We will create and facilitate a safe(r) space for you to share your experiences of working with art institutions, your frustrations at the academy and conventional art school, as well as your dreams, visions and projects along the lines of adrienne maree brown’ concept and practice of pleasure activism and intersectional feminist care. This online course is open to beginners, advanced learners and different professional backgrounds.” (Text by courtesy of Kathy-Ann Tan)
