Online Course DIGITAL ART, AI, AND NFTs: the Lead-Up to Tokenized Art by Virginia Valenzuela
“While NFTs, or artworks linked to blockchain, have existed since 2014, it wasn’t until 2021 when they really took off. Artists, coders, and entrepreneurs entered the arena, ushering in new genres of art and new innovations in technology. For the first time in history, a marketplace emerged that allowed artists from all corners of the globe to participate, indeed to thrive, and to take pride in even their most unorthodox styles of art.
Beginning with genres like generative, digital, and internet art, which were unappreciated in the time before NFTs, and diving into the genre of cryptoart, this class will explore the many ways in which artists have utilized tools enabled by crypto in order to challenge major industries. Moving from there we will compare artistic innovations within NFTs, such as interactive, responsive, and data-driven artworks, and then dive into the world of artificial intelligence. Finally, we will end the class with a review of NFT marketplaces, museums, coalitions dedicated to crypto and digital art, and web3 publications so that students will be prepared to enter the space as artists, collectors, and scholars.” (Text by courtesy of Virginia Valenzuela)
