WEEK 2: The Making of a Witch

Jasmine will briefly review the previous class and main themes, and answer questions.

In-Class Discussion of Assigned Readings
Jasmine will lead a discussion of the main themes of the assigned readings – regulation of the body, sexuality and gender, freeing the body and the body as resistance. Participants are expected to contribute questions and comments during the discussion.
 

Presentation 2: The Making of a Witch
Jasmine will offer a visual presentation with opportunities to ask questions and discuss throughout.

Topic Summary:
  • The regulation of female sexuality, why, how and the outcomes
  • What is a witch? The “Malleus Malefecarum” (“The Hammer of the Witches”)
  • Emerging witch aesthetics, witch pamphlets and other propaganda
  • Witch symbols and themes in art and literature
In-class Exercise 2
In-Class Drawing Exercise 2: Drawing the Imagined Witch
  • Jasmine will offer a series of prompts from the presentation and related texts
  • Participants will be asked to draw intuitively based on the prompts for set periods of time
  • During the drawing period, Jasmine will provide further instruction i.e., repeat, increase scale…
  • The exercise will be followed by a short discussion of the outcomes/experience
