WEEK 1: Bodies, Gender and Labor Before Capitalism

Class Introduction:
Jasmine will introduce herself, her practice, and the general approach and objectives of the class.

Presentation 1: “Bodies, Gender and Labor Before Capitalism”
Jasmine will lead a visual presentation with opportunities to ask questions and discuss throughout

 Topic Summary:

  • Brief introduction to pre-capitalist society in Europe
  • Labor and gender relations in European pre-capitalist societies
  • The regulation and mechanization of the body
  • The transformation of the role of women and her labor/production
  • The creation of gender divisions and difference

In-class Exercise 1: Group Writing Prompts

  • Jasmine will offer a series of prompts from presentation and related texts
  • Participants will be asked to write based on the prompts for set periods of time
  • During the writing period, Jasmine will provide further instruction
  • The exercise will be followed by a short discussion of the outcomes/experience   

In-Class Exercise 2: Cluster Writing 1

  • Reflect on the class topics in relation to your practice, existing ideas and/or research questions.
  • Write and/or draw your responses in your notebook/sketchbook. Write or draw as much as you feel necessary to communicate your ideas and/or questions.
  • When you are finished, title the entry “Cluster 1
