WEEK 1: What’s a Visual Narrative? Modalities of Visual Storytelling

Introduction to the course and participants. What is narrative, and why does it matter? (Lecture & Discussion)
How can an image tell a story by tapping into cognitive scripts shared by viewers? This session introduces key concepts of visual narrative, exploring how content, composition, medium and form work together to create meaning. We will analyze examples from painting, photography, comics, and contemporary art to understand different modes of storytelling, from direct representation to implied or open-ended narratives.

Key topics:

•           Narrative strategies in visual art
•           The role of composition, sequencing, and symbolism
•           Case studies: classical vs. experimental storytelling

Discussion & Reflection: Participants will be invited to share examples of works they find narratively compelling and discuss their own approaches to storytelling in their practice.
