WEEK 1: The Oldest Profession?: Satire in History

The first week will consider how satire has evolved over time and in different places. Moving from the plays of Aristophanes, through the Satires of Juvenal, to pasquinades, to courtly satires by Alexander Pope, John Dryden, the plays of Nestroy and Sheridan, to twentieth century movements like DaDa, to televisual satires like The Square, Veep and The Thick of It, the first class will seek to trace the origins of the form and to identify particular characteristics, qualities, and aims.
