[Laboratory for Appraising the Apparent]” curated by Brigitte Franzen.

Exhibition Dates: January 19 – March o3, 2018
Location:
Michel Majerus Estate
Opening Hours: Saturdays, 11 am – 6 pm, and by appointment
Address: Knaackstrasse 12, 10405 Berlin

“The exhibition’s title is a quote from Michel Majerus’ notes describing his outlook on painting in an oddly poetic yet precise and clear way. For him – and his generation – the pictorial world coexisted with image production without judgment or valuation. The acknowledgement of superficiality and the struggle with its significance, as well as the attempt to reevaluate and invent anew, all played parts in Majerus’ perception of ‘the apparent.’

Michel Majerus’ notebooks from 1995, which are part of the Estate’s archives, bear witness to the artist’s constantly evolving world of ideas, his focus on the artistic process, and his confrontations with his own position in the art world. These notebooks will be digitized over the course of the exhibition and presented as part of the show, along with the artist’s library, as a key point of reference for the artist’s work.” (Text excerpt from the press release by courtesy of Michel Majerus Estate)
