Seminar SMART AND STUPID – THE IMAGE AND ITS TECHNOLOGIES by Andreas Schlaegel

October 24 – 27, 2017, 10 am – 2 pm

Many thanks to the critic, curator & artist Andreas Schlaegel for his seminar “Smart and Stupid –The Image and its Technologies – Production, Presentation, Publication” and discussing the works of our participants.

The smart phone of today, and the stupid painter, that Marcel Duchamp ridiculed – are they connected?  Digital technology has been a gamechanger in many aspects of life, but maybe most significantly in visual culture. But looking at the history of art it becomes clear, that art has always been a discourse between what image making technologies made possible, and what domintating ideologies allowed. Can we compare the visual culture of digital image production, all the sharing, liking and connectivity, with historic examples, like the role of perspective in renaissance art or the influence of photography on the emergence  of modernism?

Less an art history course, this is an attempt to find systems and structures in the present realm of the visual in general, and the world of art specifically, to facilitate a fresh glance on current individual artistic practices.” (Andreas Schlaegel)
