With 402.berlin, the BAI is developing a new event format for art to take place at the Motorwerk Berlin, a production hall built in 1921 which is around 3,800 m² large. Already during the period after German reunification, it served as an event location under the name “Die Halle” and featured concerts by Kraftwerk, Motörhead, Marianne Rosenberg, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Zucchero, the Ramones, and many more. In 1991 the first Mayday took place here.
The hall consists of three sections, the head-end structure (401), the main hall (402) and the backstage area (403). The historical numbers remind one of present-day HTTP status codes. They lend the various sections for the art events their name: Unauthorized, Payment Required and Forbidden.
